Hardscape is unforgiving about shortcuts in a way landscaping isn't — a thin planting bed can be corrected later, but a patio poured or laid on inadequate base is a full tear-out to fix. North Georgia's clay soil and rolling terrain make base prep and drainage the two things that separate hardscape that's still flat and solid in ten years from hardscape that's sinking, heaving, or pushing outward within two.

A lot of North Georgia lots aren't flat, which means most hardscape projects here are dealing with slope whether the design calls for it or not. Water has to be directed around and away from the structure, not just downhill and hoping — a patio or wall built without accounting for where water goes during a heavy storm will eventually show it, usually as erosion undermining an edge or hydrostatic pressure pushing a wall outward.

We build the invisible part first — excavation to the right depth, several inches of properly compacted crushed stone base, and drainage behind anything that retains soil — before the visible part (pavers, wall block, stone) ever goes down. It's slower and less satisfying to watch than laying pavers, but it's the entire reason a patio is still flat five years later instead of sunken at the edges.

Our hardscape process

  1. 01

    Excavate to depth

    We excavate deeper than the finished surface requires — the base layer underneath the pavers or stone is what actually carries the load, not the pavers themselves.

  2. 02

    Compact a real base

    Several inches of crushed stone, compacted in lifts (not dumped and compacted once), with drainage sloped away from the house. This step alone determines whether the project is still flat in five years.

  3. 03

    Set edge restraints

    Hidden edge restraints go in before the field pavers do, so the whole patio or walkway is locked in place instead of relying on the pavers' own weight to stay put.

  4. 04

    Lay pavers or set stone, then compact and sand

    Pavers get laid to pattern, cut at the edges, then compacted into the bedding sand and joints filled — this is the step that's actually visible, and the fastest part of the whole job.

  5. 05

    Walk it for level and drainage

    We check the finished surface for proper slope away from structures before calling it done — a patio that looks flat to the eye can still hold water in a low spot if the slope's off by a fraction.

North Georgia considerations

  • Most North Georgia lots aren't flat — grading and drainage planning matter as much as the design itself, especially for patios near the house or walls holding back a slope.
  • Freeze-thaw cycles here are milder than further north but still real — base depth and compaction still matter for frost heave, just not to the same extreme as a true northern climate.
  • Retaining walls over roughly 4 feet (measured from the bottom of the footing) typically need engineered plans and a permit in most North Georgia counties — we flag this before quoting, not after.
  • Heavy summer thunderstorms mean drainage behind any retaining wall has to handle real volume fast, not just slowly percolate — gravel backfill and a drain pipe at the base are non-negotiable, not optional upgrades.

Hardscape FAQs

Why do some paver patios sink or shift after a year or two?

Almost always base prep — not enough compacted gravel base, or skipping it to save time. A patio that's going to last needs several inches of properly compacted crushed stone base and bedding sand before the first paver goes down. It's the least visible part of the job and the part that determines whether it's still flat in five years.

Do I need a permit or engineering for a retaining wall?

In most North Georgia counties, taller walls (typically over 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing) need engineered plans and a permit — shorter walls usually don't. Height, the slope behind the wall, and what's sitting above it (a driveway, a house foundation) all factor in. We'll tell you up front if your wall needs engineering before we quote it.

How long does a paver patio installation take?

A typical residential patio (300–600 sq ft) runs 3–7 working days depending on excavation depth, drainage work, and weather — grading and base compaction take longer than laying the actual pavers.

Can you build a fire pit or outdoor kitchen into a paver patio?

Yes — fire pits, seat walls, and outdoor kitchen structures are usually planned into the patio layout from the start so the base, drainage, and any gas or electrical rough-in happen together instead of retrofitting them into a finished patio later.

What's the difference between segmental, boulder, and block retaining walls?

Segmental (interlocking concrete) walls are the most common for residential work — consistent, engineered systems that stack without mortar. Boulder walls use large natural stone for a more rustic, informal look and typically cost more for the same wall height due to material and equipment needs. Block walls (like traditional CMU) are usually reserved for structural or taller applications and get a stone or brick veneer. We'll recommend the one that fits your slope, budget, and the look you're after.

Why does my existing retaining wall look like it's leaning or bulging?

That's usually drainage failure, not a design flaw — water pressure building up behind the wall because there's no gravel backfill and drain pipe to relieve it. It gets worse after wet seasons and won't fix itself. Depending on severity, it may need rebuilding with proper drainage rather than a surface patch.

Do you match existing pavers or stone for a patio extension?
