Is My Cracked Concrete Driveway Normal, or a Problem?
Seeing a crack in a concrete driveway or patio makes most homeowners assume something went wrong. Sometimes that's true — but a lot of cracking is completely normal and doesn't mean the slab is failing.
Control joints exist on purpose
Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures — it's just how the material behaves as water leaves the mix. If that shrinkage isn't controlled, it cracks randomly, wherever it's weakest. That's why every properly poured slab gets control joints: grooves cut (or formed) into the surface in a planned pattern, usually in a grid.
Those joints create a deliberate weak point, so when the concrete does shrink and crack, it cracks along that straight, planned line instead of splitting randomly across the middle of your driveway. A slab with clean, straight joint lines and no random cracking outside of them is a slab that was poured and jointed correctly.
Hairline cracks vs. structural cracks
- Hairline cracks — thin as a pencil line, not offset (one side isn't higher than the other), not growing — are cosmetic. Normal shrinkage, nothing to fix structurally.
- Structural cracks — wide, growing over time, or with one side higher than the other (a trip hazard) — mean something underneath moved. That's usually a base or drainage issue, not just "concrete being concrete."
If you can slide a coin edge-on into a crack, or one side has visibly settled compared to the other, that's worth having looked at.
What actually causes the bad kind
Structural cracking and heaving almost always trace back to one of these:
- No compacted gravel base, or a base that wasn't compacted properly — the soil underneath settles unevenly and the slab follows it.
- Slab poured too thin, or without reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh) where the application calls for it — a driveway needs more structural backup than a garden path.
- Poor drainage under or around the slab, letting water saturate and shift the base material, especially through freeze-thaw cycles.
None of those are things you can see once the concrete is poured — they're decisions made (or skipped) before the pour, which is why it matters who's doing that part of the job.
Curing time myths
Concrete is workable to walk on in about 24–48 hours, but it isn't "done" at that point — it reaches roughly 70% of its final strength around 7 days, and continues gaining strength for close to a month. That's why we tell customers to keep vehicles off a new driveway for at least a week: driving on it too early, while it's still gaining strength, is one of the few things that can cause real damage after a good pour.
